In animal research, dihexa has been administered through several routes, and reports describe improved performance on spatial learning and memory tasks in rodents. These results are frequently cited in discussions of nootropic compounds. However, species differences, small sample sizes, and varied testing protocols limit how far the findings can be generalized. No large randomized controlled trials in humans have established efficacy or long-term safety. Claims about human cognitive enhancement therefore remain speculative, and the compound is best described as an experimental laboratory substance rather than a proven therapeutic or supplement.
Dihexa is a synthetic compound studied in laboratory and animal models for effects on synaptic connectivity and cognitive performance. It is often described as a peptide analog because its structure incorporates amino acid residues linked to a hexanoic acid group. The molecule is not a naturally occurring human hormone or neurotransmitter. Its name appears in research literature and online discussions, but it has not been approved as a medicine by major regulatory agencies. Most information comes from preclinical experiments rather than controlled human trials.
The compound originated from work on angiotensin IV, a peptide fragment of the renin-angiotensin system. Researchers modified angiotensin IV-related structures to produce molecules with altered stability and activity. Dihexa emerged from that effort and was reported to promote dendritic spine growth in cultured neurons. Some studies link its effects to hepatocyte growth factor signaling and the c-Met receptor, while other work points to insulin-regulated aminopeptidase. The precise primary target remains a subject of investigation, and findings may depend on cell type, assay conditions, and species.
Identity and purity of dihexa samples are typically assessed with high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. These methods can confirm molecular mass and estimate the presence of impurities. However, a certificate of analysis from a supplier is not a guarantee of independent testing. Researchers often require in-house verification before using a peptide in experiments. For solid samples, appearance, solubility, and chromatographic profile provide additional checks. Nuclear magnetic resonance may be used for structural confirmation when available.
Dihexa is commonly handled as a lyophilized powder in laboratory settings. Storage at -20 °C in a desiccated, light-protected container is typical for peptides. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can degrade the material, so aliquoting is often recommended. Aqueous solutions may be less stable than organic stocks and should be prepared fresh when possible. Personnel should follow institutional safety procedures and avoid uncontrolled exposure. Because human effects are not well characterized, handling precautions are prudent.

Quality control usually combines reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. Chromatography estimates purity and detects related impurities, while mass spectrometry supports molecular identity. Nuclear magnetic resonance can provide additional structural confirmation when needed. Stability data for dihexa are limited, and degradation pathways may depend on pH, temperature, and moisture. Open questions include long-term stability in different formulations and the effect of repeated freeze-thaw cycles on measured purity. Such tests help confirm that a batch matches its label before use.
In laboratory settings, dihexa is typically handled as a lyophilized peptide powder. Appropriate personal protective equipment and a ventilated workspace are standard practices for weighing and transferring research chemicals. Because the compound lacks regulatory approval for clinical use, it should not be given to people. Institutional safety rules and local regulations govern its acquisition, storage, and disposal. Suppliers often provide a certificate of analysis that lists purity, identity, and batch-specific handling notes.
The compound has been examined in animal models for effects on learning, memory, and synaptic connectivity. Some reports describe increased dendritic spine density and improved performance on certain behavioral tasks after administration in rodents. These findings are often cited in discussions of nootropic research peptides, but replication across independent laboratories remains limited. The absence of published phase 1 or phase 2 clinical trial data makes it difficult to assess safety, effective routes, or long-term outcomes in humans. Consequently, claims about cognitive benefits in people remain speculative.
Dihexa is not approved as a medicine in major regulatory jurisdictions. It is commonly sold as a research chemical for laboratory use, though such products may not be standardized or independently verified. Scientific literature on dihexa includes in vitro assays, rodent studies, and reviews that discuss its proposed mechanism. The distinction between peer-reviewed findings and commercial promotion is important when evaluating available information. Open questions include its precise binding interactions, pharmacokinetics, and whether animal results translate to human biology.
Manipulation of CpG-S and CpG-N sequences in the plasmid backbone of DNA vaccines can ensure the success of the immune response to the encoded antigen and drive the immune response toward a TH1 phenotype. This is useful if a pathogen requires a TH response for protection. CpG-S sequences have also been used as external adjuvants for both DNA and recombinant protein vaccination with variable success rates. Other organisms with hypomethylated CpG motifs have demonstrated the stimulation of polyclonal B-cell expansion. The mechanism behind this may be more complicated than simple methylation – hypomethylated murine DNA has not been found to mount an immune response. Most of the evidence for immunostimulatory CpG sequences comes from murine studies. Extrapolation of this data to other species requires caution – individual species may require different flanking sequences, as binding specificities of scavenger receptors vary across species. Additionally, species such as ruminants may be insensitive to immunostimulatory sequences due to their large gastrointestinal load.
== Epidemiology == Few studies have examined the prevalence of FECD on a large scale. First assessed in a clinical setting, Fuchs himself estimated the occurrence of dystrophia epithelialis corneae to be one in every 2000 patients; a rate that is likely reflective of those who progress to advanced disease. Cross-sectional studies suggest a relatively higher prevalence of disease in European countries relative to other areas of the world. Fuchs dystrophy rarely affects individuals under 50 years of age.
=== Identity of filaments === Controversy regarding the identity of the filaments preserved in the first Sinosauropteryx specimen began almost immediately, as the team of scientists spent three days in Beijing examining the specimen under a microscope. The results of their studies (reported during a press conference at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences on Thursday, April 24, 1997) were inconclusive; the team agreed that the structures preserved on Sinosauropteryx were not modern feathers, but suggested further research was required to discover their exact nature. Palaeontologist Alan Feduccia, who had not yet examined the specimen, wrote in Audubon Magazine that the structures of Sinosauropteryx (which he considered at the time to be a synonym of Compsognathus, as Compsognathus prima) were stiffening structures from a frill running along the back, and that dinosaur palaeontologists were engaging in wishful thinking when equating the structures with feathers. Subsequent publications saw some of the team members disagreeing over the identity of the structures.

=== Sentencing === In 1998, there were wide racial disparities in arrests, prosecutions, sentencing, and deaths. Black people, despite being only 13% of regular drug users, made up for 35% of drug arrests, 55% of convictions, and 74% of people sent to prison for drug possession crimes. Nationwide African-Americans were sent to state prisons for drug offenses 13 times more often than white men. Crime statistics show that in 1999 in the United States, blacks were far more likely to be targeted by law enforcement for drug crimes, and they received much stiffer penalties and sentences than whites. A 2000 study found that the disproportionality of black drug offenders in Pennsylvania prisons was unexplained by higher arrest rates, which suggested the possibility of operative discrimination in sentencing. A 2008 paper stated that drug use rates by blacks (7.4%) were comparable to those by whites (7.2%), and since there are far more whites than blacks, 72% of illegal drug users in America are white, and only 15% are black. According to Michelle Alexander, the author of The New Jim Crow and a professor of law at Stanford Law School, drug trading is done at similar rates all over the US, but most people arrested for it are colored. Together, blacks and Hispanics were 58% of all prisoners in 2008 but only one quarter of the US population. Most prisoners are arrested for drug related crime, and in at least 15 states, three quarters of them are black or Latino.
== Legacy == In 1976, the National Park Service designated the Charles Richard Drew House in Arlington County, Virginia, as a National Historic Landmark in response to a nomination by the Afro-American Bicentennial Corporation. In 1981, the United States Postal Service issued a 35¢ postage stamp in its Great Americans series to honor Drew. In 2002, scholar Molefi Kete Asante listed Drew as one of the 100 Greatest African Americans.
Chlorambucil, sold under the brand name Leukeran among others, is a chemotherapy medication used to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), Hodgkin lymphoma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It is given by mouth. Common side effects include bone marrow suppression. Other serious side effects include an increased long term risk of further cancer, infertility, and allergic reactions. Use during pregnancy often results in harm to the baby. Chlorambucil is in the alkylating agent family of medications. It works by blocking the formation of DNA and RNA. Chlorambucil was approved for medical use in the United States in 1957. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. It was originally made from nitrogen mustard.

Historically, American black bears occupied the majority of North America's forested regions. Today, they are primarily limited to sparsely settled, forested areas. American black bears currently inhabit much of their original Canadian range, though they seldom occur in the southern farmlands of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; they have been extirpated on Prince Edward Island since 1937. Surveys taken in the mid-1990s found the Canadian black bear population to be between 396,000 and 476,000 in seven provinces; this estimate excludes populations in New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. All provinces indicated stable populations of American black bears over the 2000s. The current range in the United States is constant throughout most of the Northeast and within the Appalachian Mountains almost continuously from Maine to northern Georgia, the northern Midwest, the Rocky Mountain region, the West Coast and Alaska. However, it becomes increasingly fragmented or absent in other regions. Despite this, American black bears in those areas seem to have expanded their range in recent decades, such as with sightings in Ohio, Illinois, southern Indiana, and western Nebraska. Sightings of itinerant black bears in the Driftless Area of southeastern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, and southwestern Wisconsin are common.

=== Starch === Partially hydrolysed potato starch makes for another non-toxic medium for protein electrophoresis. The gels are slightly more opaque than acrylamide or agarose. Non-denatured proteins can be separated according to charge and size. They are visualised using Napthal Black or Amido Black staining. Typical starch gel concentrations are 5% to 10%.
To a first approximation, the non-polar phase in such experiments is usually dominated by the un-ionized form of the solute, which is electrically neutral, though this may not be true for the aqueous phase. To measure the partition coefficient of ionizable solutes, the pH of the aqueous phase is adjusted such that the predominant form of the compound in solution is the un-ionized, or its measurement at another pH of interest requires consideration of all species, un-ionized and ionized (see following). A corresponding partition coefficient for ionizable compounds, abbreviated log P I, is derived for cases where there are dominant ionized forms of the molecule, such that one must consider partition of all forms, ionized and un-ionized, between the two phases (as well as the interaction of the two equilibria, partition and ionization). M is used to indicate the number of ionized forms; for the I-th form (I = 1, 2, ... , M) the logarithm of the corresponding partition coefficient,
== History == With the capture of Óscar Orlando Nava Valencia in October 2009 and the death of Ignacio Coronel Villarreal, of the Sinaloa Cartel in 29 July 2010, a power vacuum emerged and the Milenio Cartel (then loyal to the Sinaloa Cartel) broke into smaller factions. The most notable were the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) headed by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes "El Mencho" (who suspected the Sinaloa cartel had betrayed its leaders) and La Resistencia headed by Ramiro Pozos "El Molca" who switched alliances to form a brief alliance with Los Zetas (La Resistencia was founded by Sinaloa to counter Los Zetas), and started a turf war for control of the region. Some members of the Milenio Cartel, then a Sinaloa Cartel branch, who splintered and formed the CJNG were Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (El Mencho), Érick Valencia Salazar (El 85) and Martín Arzola Ortega (El 53). With this split, a turf war against La Resistencia, headed by Ramiro Pozos (El Molca), and Los Zetas for the control of the region started. Emilio Alejandro Pulido Saldaña, better known as "El Tiburón", was considered to be a co-founder as well.
